"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
I would but, in fact, didn't need to as a friend was very kind and gifted this game to me. I decided to put a stop to completing the Last of Us and check this one out. I have fond memories of the movies and I even had a RoboCop comic book, plus, I watched the cartoon on TV when I was young (we might still have some episodes recorded on VHS tapes somewhere in a box in the basement).
"Maybe what we need here is a fresh perspective."
After releasing Terminator Resistance, folks at Teyon probably had this idea. What was interesting to me here is that usually such releases are tied to a new movie or series. With Terminator we had Dark Fate back in 2019. It was easy to get into Resistance since Terminator was once again a big thing.
Rogue City, however, got released out of the blue. The last movie - a dreadful remake - came out back in 2014. There is an entry on imdb titled RoboCop Returns which is advertised as a direct sequel to the first movie completely disregarding the rest, but that's it.
"What are your Prime Directives?"
It's RoboCop so as long as there are a lot of shootouts and excessive gore, we should be fine with it, right? Honestly, for me it was a no and I was eager to find out what story the creators came up with. Murphy's journey begins some time after RoboCop 2. Cain is now dead but his legacy still lives on as the so-called Nuke drug is still on the streets. We are introduced to the Torch Heads and the Vultures, two gangs approached by the mysterious New Guy who just showed up in the city of Detroit ready to do business with bad guys.
I don't want to share anything more to spoil the story but let's just say there are some surprises and that you will meet a lot of familiar faces along the way as Murphy once again serves the public trust, protects the innocent and upholds the law. It's nice teaming up with Lewis once again, meeting Reed at the station and even speaking to the Old Man from OCP.
Hub sections where you return are common such as the police station or an important downtown area in Detroit. Apart from your main objectives you even have secondary tasks to do. In around 20 hours I did everything there is to do in RoboCop while obtaining all achievements. All this by barely starting a new game+. I say this is pretty neat for a story-based action game.
"Dead or alive, you're coming with me!"
Wait! Murphy exists in the form of a heavily armored cyborg. His armor deflects all bullets coming at him. In what way is this game difficult if I can just push through the bad guys creating more and more body bags in the process? Naturally, in the first mission this question is not on your mind. You enjoy using Robo's Auto-9 gun making a splatter out of each thug especially when you make critical hits such as headshots.
You do notice how you cannot crouch or move fast. So, in case there are more enemies all coming at you, you will get hit many times. Your health slowly decreases and this is even worse when grenades are thrown at you or special enemies attack (with rocket launchers, grenade launchers or sniper rifles). You have charges at your disposal to heal but they are limited. You have to be on the lookout for more during the game!
You will learn how important headshots are. Your special vision (when you press right click) will always help with the targeting of enemies even in the dark. Sometimes hiding behind large boxes or columns will be essential but your dash ability will help you with this. To be honest, the system employed here is quite basic but I liked it, nonetheless. And this is only on normal difficulty - on higher ones you probably have to be more careful.
"Murphy... I'm a mess..."
"They'll fix you. They fix everything."
Just as you fix Detroit in the process! I already talked about secondary objectives. Not only does it mean that you can, for instance, bump into two police officers and assist them with solving a murder while patrolling the streets, but you can also issue tickets to citizens committing crimes such as drinking in the public or defacing property. Robo is given two choices always: upholding the law by issuing a ticket or letting the culprit go with a warning and by doing so "serving public trust".
This is an interesting system and with important NPCs dialogue options are even more important as they will affect the endgame. You can decide, for instance, to help a reporter in her fight against OCP or you can do the opposite by being loyal to your employer. You have one particular ability that helps with picking the right answer i.e. highlighting what their result will be. The ending will show what happened to these NPCs and this is defined by what relationship you had with them.
"I say good business is where you find it."
It's always good business to add some RPG elements to a game even it is primarily just a shooter. Here we have altogether 7 skills to improve upon. Every objective we do, every enemy we kill or every evidence we find while completing a mission yields more and more XP. There is an evaluation screen every time you return to the police station - here you can get up to 3 skill points to spend.
Are you low on charges? Add some points to vitality so that you can repair yourself by interacting with fuse boxes. Do you like taking every battle head-on? Increase armor so that you can deflect more bullets and can activate even a shield for a temporary period of time. Are you having fun when breaking through a door as it puts you in slow-mo? Buy some slots in focus which will grant you a slow motion ability you can activate on the go. And there's more: an easier way to convince NPCs, better scanning options, higher weapon damage, the ability to hack turrets and you can also get everything important highlighted already on your map to get help with collectibles.
"D*ck, you're fired!"
A nice surprise when you are introduced to the OCP boards. You can activate these and then you can apply chips to them that you find while looking around everywhere. With each chip applied you can activate nodes on the board that grant you additional bonus to your reload time or weapon damage or piercing damage against armor. End nodes often have surprising new effects such as greater spread or just giving better gore effects during shootout. Boards you find later are larger meaning the benefits you'll get are much better. In fact, one you get specifically by completing the game. I reckon adding this system was important since you mostly use Robo's service weapon. A 2nd weapon can also be picked up but you will not take it to the next mission (I can confirm you can even get hold of a Cobra Assault Cannon).
"Nice shootin', son. What's your name?"
"Murphy."
Another question to Murphy would be what easter eggs one may find in the game? Everything you need! The characters you meet, the car he uses (the camera angle showing Murphy leaving the garage at police HQ is directly taken from the movie), you meet an NPC whose body is covered with the green sunscreen that was advertised in the movie. At one point you can find a 6000 SUX in a garage. The way the camera shows Robo stepping out of his vehicle... very iconic! In one mission I even found the Nukem board game! And in case you wondered: RoboCop is indeed voiced by Peter Weller!
"I LIKE IT!!!"
I said the same when finishing up the story. I only had issues with its very demanding graphics. Especially in cutscenes you can have FPS drops. Hitting ESC and coming back from the menu solves the issue. Even with slightly lowered settings the game looks beautiful. The gore effects, the sirens reflecting on Murphy's helmet, the puddles on the streets reflecting Detroit... everything looks great. This is a highly recommended purchase (mainly for the fans of the franchise).

The Good:
+ Faithful to the robocop universe
+ Beautiful environments and sound design
+ GUI is well designed and easy to use
+ Guns (especially the RoboCop's pistol) are fun to use.
+ Works on Linux when using Steam's built-in Proton layer.
The BAD:
- Super laggy with constant frame drops. Some areas are so laggy that it becomes almost unplayable (turning down graphics didn't help). This became very problematic when fighting against bosses. I'm talking about FPS drops from 110FPS to 17FPS. So it's badly optimized.
- Voice acting is just bad: Usually very out of context and interactions/voice line changes are rushed and "cheap". The devs also decided to use the same voice actors on multiple occasions.
- Lack of music variation. There's this one punk-style song playing throughout the whole game and it becomes super annoying. OST is at the same time rarely used to enhance the experience. But when the game is using soundtrack, the variation is lacking and the soundtracks themselves are just meh...
- Boss battles are recycled and boring.
- Story is uninteresting. Prepare to be bored.
- Characters are boring and usually cheaply animated. Same thing applies to the cut scenes. Many of these NPCs are also very annoying IMHO.
- When using controller, there's a big sensitivity difference when turning your camera horizontally/vertically compared to the sensitivity when downward/upward sloping the camera. You can notice this difference when you rotate the controller's right thumbstrick 360 degrees continuously. This makes the aiming harder and is very inconstant. Same thing happens with all my controllers I've tested (including controllers which use very accurate hall-effect sticks).
- Bad enemy variation.
Conclusion:
Cheaply made RoboCop adaptation, which is simply too flawed to be a actual good game. However, if you are a big RoboCop fan, this might keep your interest long enough to finish the game's main storyline.

If you like RoboCop even a little, this game is a fantastic love letter to the source material. You feel like RoboCop and the writing is spot-on.

So, man... I really want to LOVE this game, as it is one of my favorite IPs, hands down. When the game is good, it's a lot of fun. The real issue with it is that it has too many bugs and issues for a game that has been out this long and at this price point.
To start, it crashes A LOT. It often times doesn't run smoothly and this is an issue across multiple PCs and laptops, all of which are top of the line. The biggest problem with crashes is that it tends to happen towards the end of a lengthy part and thus, I have to play it over again and hope it won't crash again. Adding to this issue is the fact that the game's save system is absolute dog shit, as is its checkpoint system. Multiple times when I fire the game back up, it loads up 1-2 missions behind where I was the last time I played. With sections in this game being overly lengthy, this really f'n sucks and destroys the flow and momentum of gameplay. The fact that I can't just save whenever I want and have the game also load properly, breaks this for me. I'm now just totally demotivated and don't want to finish this. Sucks, because I was enjoying the story... at least much more than what we got with RoboCop 3.

It's not nearly as good as their terminator game which in my opinion is their best work, and if you enjoy old movies like that then go play that game. This game is still amazing though, it's another one of my childhood classic movies. The soundtrack being taken from the movies is a nice touch, that and the custom tracks are fire, the gunplay is absolutely amazing, the story is absolute perfection, but more importantly it's the fan service of this developer. I appreciate the fact that they made dedicated experiences within the atmosphere of the movies they base their games off of, Rambo was a flop but they learned from that and made the best terminator and robocop games ever, both games fit their atmosphere better than anything else with a soundtrack that perfectly mimics their old composers, and all with original stories that fit the movies and they just make sense. The one thing I regret is not buying this game at full price, they may not be the best, but this developer has both a heart and a soul which is something that 99% of AAA games are incapable of trying to achieve.

I almost bounced off this one. The opening level does the game no favors—it feels like a generic AA shooter with sluggish movement and very little to sink your teeth into. But man, I’m glad I stuck with it. Once the upgrades start rolling in and you get comfortable in Robo’s armor, the whole game clicks. You’re flinging punks across rooms, punching heads off, shrugging off machine gun fire like it's nothing, and popping bullet-time to clean house. That’s when the game sings.
Pros:
- The shooting is excellent, especially as you upgrade Robo’s skills.
- The Auto-9 is endlessly satisfying to use (though I wish other weapons had more love).
- Destructible environments really bring the gunfights to life. Reminds of Bad Company 2; the before and after of a combat zone is really cool to experience.
- Writing is sharp. It pokes fun at itself, leans into that 80s action flick tone, but never feels like a parody. It’s reverent without being self-serious.
You don’t have to be a RoboCop fan to enjoy it. I went in with basically zero memory of the films and still had a blast.
Cons:
- Slow start. XP rollout and gameplay variety in the first hour or two are rough. It assumes you’ll play NG+, but it shouldn't.
- The upgrade system for the Auto-9 is a little confusing (at first, at least), and other weapons feel like an afterthought. I wish there were more upgrade paths/builds for the Auto-9.
- Boss fights are weak across the board.
- Surprisingly demanding on PC. I’m running a 3080 with an i7-11700KF and still had to drop it to 1080p for a steady 60fps.
Final Thoughts: This is a mid-budget game that knows exactly what it is, and it plays to those strengths. It’s scrappy, stylish, and sincere. If you give it a bit of time to open up, RoboCop: Rogue City absolutely delivers that power fantasy you’d hope for.
Score: 8.5/10
Would absolutely recommend, even if you’ve never seen the movie.

Great game, it's fun all around and it delivers in what it promises.
The story is more interesting and has more repercussions than some AAA games nowadays that give you a 50h long story that gets boring and meaningless after a while, and you actually care about some characters in the game.
Combat is extremely simple but fun, reminds me of arcade shooters for some reason, maybe the lack of recoil in the guns adds to this feeling. Something to add was how an upgrade to my gun made all the other guns you find totally irrelevant (giving my main gun an automatic feeder without the need to reload) so there's not really an incentive to use the guns you find after that.
I definitely recommend the game and hope to see similar games in the future.

RoboCop: Rogue City is a solid FPS with satisfying combat and a faithful recreation of the RoboCop universe. This game exceeded my expectations.
P.S.: I'd buy THAT for a Dollar!

RoboCop: Rogue City is a great homage to the RoboCop movies. It does a lot of things right, mainly shooting criminals in the nuts and throwing them off in the air. There are open world elements to the game, making it an entertaining non-linear experience. Being able to explore and do other things beside the main story adds depth to the game and its characters.
Being a AA game with a limited budget, the game is great especially if you get it on sale. Its a short 15 hour game that gives you a RoboCop experience reminiscent of the movies.
